The film takes place in the distant 1939 in Italy, on the eve of the Second World War. A young guy named Guido comes from the village to the big city. There he meets a wonderful girl Dora, who works as a teacher. Between young people love breaks out, and soon they get married. Up to a certain point, everything in the life of the couple develops as well as possible: they have a son, as Guido and Dora open their own bookstore. However, with the arrival of the Nazis, Guido and his son, like the rest of the Jews living in Italy, are sent to a concentration camp. Understanding, to what all goes, loving father, to spare his child from brutal reality, says him, that all happening around this only game, and to in it defeat need to adhere to certain rules: cannot be cry, to complain and smaller get caught soldiers on eyes.
